PREREQUISITES
A. English as a Second Language 5A or acceptable level of English as demonstrated in the ESL placement process.
B. Advisories include English as a Second Language 6B and/or 6C.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
English 6A is an upper-intermediate/ advanced ESL course for students with proven competence in written English at an intermediate level. Its purpose is to provide students with advanced skills in composition, grammar, reading, punctuation, and vocabulary to enable them to make a successful transition to non-ESL English classes. This course is designed for students at the advanced level of English language acquisition and provides instruction in writing extended essays using a variety of rhetorical modes, critical thinking, reading at the advanced level, and verbal communication. Objectives include:
1) In grammar, to enable students to write clear, grammatically correct multi-clause sentences and to understand the relationships of ideas within such sentences.
2) In composition, to assure that students are competent at writing a variety of different kinds of paragraphs, and to enable them to write well-organized and adequately developed essays, instructing them in a step-by-step process to do so, utilizing text-based evidence.
3) In reading, to provide students with recognition skills in assessing main ideas and connotative meanings in fiction and advanced nonfiction prose.
4) In vocabulary, to provide students with a steady flow of new and relevant vocabulary, both formal and idiomatic, from required reading.

These objectives are designed to help you meet our department's requirements (CLOs) for this course. By the end of the semester, you will be able to:
1. Analyze and synthesize ideas from various fiction and/or non-fiction texts for inclusion in an extended text-based academic essay.
2. Write an essay with a minimum of five paragraphs, which includes an introduction with a clear thesis statement, well-developed supporting paragraphs, and a logical conclusion.

NOTE: TRANSFER OF CREDIT
This class transfers to both the CSU and UC systems, but please note that the UC system accepts only a total of 8 transfer units from any combination of units from E.S.L. 5A, E.S.L. 6A, and E.S.L. 8.
NOTE: PASS/NO PASS OPTION
ESL courses at levels 3 and 4 are pass/no-pass. Students will not receive a letter grade for these courses, but rather a P or NP. ESL courses at levels 5, 6, 7 and 8 are optional pass/no-pass. The default is for the students to receive a letter grade unless they explicitly petition to take a P or NP. The deadline for completing and submitting the appropriate form for this change is Friday, October 4th - students must do this on their own, and once they change to pass/no-pass, they may not change back to a letter grade option.
